Audiation. Technique. Artistry.

Online and In-Person Lessons located in Kenilworth (Edmonton, Alberta)

When we think of what skills we need to play the piano, what often first comes to mind is fast fingers and the ability to read music. While these are important components, traditional pedagogy often over-emphasizes these skills at the expense of others. Playing piano, and more importantly, being a musician, involves fine motor skills, knowledge of the most efficient and healthful ways to use our bodies at the instrument, collaboration, and deep listening skills. When we learn these skills, participating in music goes beyond a surface understanding of how to read music and move our fingers to lifelong, deep musical understanding and appreciation.

Edwin E. Gordon, a music researcher, dedicated his life to researching the scientific process of how we learn music. He compiled his findings of the stages of music learning into a theory he called "Music Learning Theory." It is not a method, but rather an explanation of the different stages of musical development and how best to support children (or adults!) at each stage.  Audiation, a term coined by Gordon, is the ability to "think" in music. Musicians who audiate can improvise, create, and play with deep musical understanding. Developing audiation involves moving, singing, and chanting.

Technique is not WHAT we play, but HOW we use our bodies to make music at our instruments. Developing a basic understanding of anatomy and biomechanics allows us to play in an efficient and healthful manner.

When we develop solid foundations in audiation and technique, we are empowered to create music and become artists. Whether you are just beginning your musical journey or have been on it for many years, we will explore and create different sounds, textures, and colours.
